7 Proven tips to keep you motivated to workout
Being motivated to continue working out is incredibly difficult over a longer period of time, it’s always easy at the beginning and then when you wake up a little tired or have a stressful day at work this is where it can get ‘tough’ to drag yourself through your workout. This is why it is very important to have some tips and tricks up your sleeves to keep you motivated even when you really don’t want to do it.
Let’s face it no one wants to lift some heavy s**t when they’d rather be sat at home in front of the TV with a tub of Ben and Jerrys.
Set goals - start with small realistic goals that you actually have a chance of obtaining rather than always aiming for the end product. Be specific with your goals, instead of saying I want to walk more - you should say I want to walk for 30 minutes 3 times per week. This way you are able to visually see yourself doing it.
Track your progress - keep a record of your workouts and the progress you are making, this way you can visibly see the progress which will help keep you motivated. Reward yourself for reaching milestones, make sure the rewards are contributing to your goals though. Don’t reward yourself with a KFC for losing 1lb if your goal is weight loss, but allow yourself something that you class as a ‘treat’ for reaching your goal and then quickly move on to hitting the next goal.
Find activities you enjoy - It can be quite boring going into the same gym every day and doing the same exercises each week doing 3 sets of 10 reps. If you enjoy playing sports/swimming/cycling get that included in your weekly/monthly schedule, as long as it is physical activity it can be classed as your workout. This will help prevent you stopping from burnout or boredom, exercise should be enjoyable for you so don’t do something you hate.
Reward yourself for milestones
Find a training partner - this can be one of the best things to do if you find you can easily talk yourself out of going to the gym, having someone else to hold you accountable can be the difference from you getting your results and giving up completely. Letting yourself down is one thing but letting down a training partner is very tough to do, they will get you through workouts you didn’t know you would be able to do. A training partner could be a gym class, where you just have to turn up and the instructor tells you what to do so you don’t have to think about anything. If you are both working towards the same end goal too that would be even better, you will be able to push each other through week after week.
Set a schedule - plan ahead to avoid failure, set your workouts in specific times of the day as you would important meetings. This will help keep you accountable and make sure the times suit your needs - if you don’t like working out in the morning you are best off not putting yourself down for an early morning workout.
Change your perspective - if you find that you are starting over and over again on your health and fitness journey, maybe you are looking at the wrong goals. Focus more on improving your quality of life and longevity of your life, this is far more important than how you look to people you have never spoken to before. We spend so much time worrying about what others think of us or what we look like that we can sacrifice our health as part of it. Focus on improving your mental health, overall fitness and quality of life and I guarantee you will start to see improvements from an aesthetic point of view too.
There are 7 points that are easy enough for you to incorporate into your day to day life, just take one step at a time making sure you improve by that 1% each day and eventually you will be a completely different person.
