PROTEIN BARS! Yay or Nay?
Protein bars, any good?
Short answer - Yes.
Protein bars are a great way for you to enjoy something sweet and maybe even class as a 'treat' whilst still working towards your weight/fat loss goals.
They usually contain around 20g of protein and 220 calories (ish). This can slot nicely into your daily calories whilst providing a good hit of protein, bumping up your daily intake. Even more so if you add them to a protein yogurt (double whammy).
The common complaint is ‘it just isn’t the same as a chocolate bar’. No it is not, well done, no s**t sherlock. HOWEVER it provides nutritional qualities that your average chocolate bar does not. Therefore for the average overweight person who is trying to lose weight and enjoys chocolate, a protein bar is the perfect alternative snack for them to still get a chocolate/sweet fix whilst staying on track with their calorie goal.
On the other hand let’s take the infamous mars bar as an example, A mars bar (not the protein variety) has 229 calories and 2.3g of protein. Which on the face of it is pretty appalling in regards to calories to protein ratio. But 99.9999% of the time we aren't having a mars bar to bump up our protein intake, we are having it because they are bloody tasty.
So having said that, if you need to bump your protein intake up you are probably best having a protein bar, If you have the calories 'spare' from your allowance and your protein target has been hit then why can't you enjoy the lovely caramel centre of a mars bar without feeling like complete s**t.
Life is all about moderation, protein bars serve a superb purpose as an alternative for those of us that aren’t quite ready to ditch the chocolate just yet. However use your head, track your calories and take accountability and you will be able to enjoy a chocolate bar guilt free whilst still working towards your goals.

What is your chocolate bar of choice?
And the all important question, chocolate in or out the fridge?
